Let’s talk about weight loss muscle and weights.
“My metabolism has slowed down” That’s a common statement when I first speak with a member. And as much as they are correct, the reason may be (VERY good possibility) it’s NOT due to just their age, and it certainly might NOT have to do with menopause, however, it HAS to do with muscle loss…Whoooaaa.
See, when we age (and not continue to weight train) we lose muscle mass. It’s called “Atrophy”.
And when we lose muscle mass the body isn’t as efficient in losing weight.
On the other hand, the more lean muscle we build, the more our metabolism kicks into gear and burns the FAT around the muscle tissue.
I’m here to tell you today that weight loss is just NOT enough.
Well, either is running, Zumba and spinning.
Some of you may think, Heck, it’s enough for me. I just want to lose weight and not have to exercise all the time. I get it. I really do. There are plenty of days I have no desire to pick up a weight or move my body getting my heart rate up.
Gaining muscle does not only apply to men. If you want to change the way your body looks, and get rid of that mushy feel then start to weight lift.
Don’t be afraid to pick up those weights and watch what happens.
Not everyone exercises to look good, although statistics tell us most do. If you are one of them, and have not started weight lifting to go along with your running, Zumba and spin classes, you have the answer as to why you don’t look the way you want.
Even body weight exercises are great, but challenging yourself to go a bit heavier, picking up dumbbells, kettlebells and weighted bars and “lift” is how you can really make some great changes.
